Willpower is a terrible opponent — a friend is a much better one. In Pauza you stake in-app tokens head-to-head: whoever has the lower screen time when the challenge ends takes the pot. It's the accountability of a bet without money: tokens have no cash value and can't be cashed out, so nothing is ever at risk except bragging rights.
how challenges work
- Open Pauza and go to the Challenges tab, then tap New challenge.
- Choose 1v1 (against a friend) or solo (against your own goal).
- Pick the length — 1, 3, 7 or 14 days — and how many tokens to commit.
- Send the invite. When your friend accepts, both commitments lock into escrow.
- The challenge starts at midnight. Live scroll-time totals show in the app and in the Dynamic Island.
- When it ends, whoever scrolled less wins the pot — 2x their own commitment in tokens.
why a bet works when limits don't
App limits fail quietly: you tap "Ignore Limit" and nobody knows. A challenge fails loudly — your friend wins. That social stake is the difference between a rule you set for yourself and a promise you made to someone else.
And because Pauza tracks per app, only the apps you chose count against you. Maps, music, work chats — none of it hurts your score. Your friend never sees which apps you used, only an anonymous daily minute total.
is this gambling?
No. You stake tokens you earned by staying off your phone; they have no cash value, cannot be bought for money in a challenge context, and cannot be cashed out. Losing costs you tokens and pride — never money.
